Chichen Itza, wonder of the world

Chichen Itza, wonder of the world

Two international awards for a holy city

For its unique characteristics, Chichen Itza has been awarded the titles of “World heritage site” and one of the “New 7 wonders of the world”

The Greek philosopher and poet Antipater of Cyrene listed 7 edifications of the ancient world in one of his poems that he believed were nothing less than the embodiment of beauty. Unfortunately, only one of these seven wonders is still standing today as a testament of its existence, that structure is the Pyramid of Giza.

The Swiss Brendan Weber, founder of the “New Open World Corporation”, organized an international poll to find the “New 7 wonders of the world”. The voters were able to choose from any structure built throughout history up to the year 2000 but the only condition that was stipulated was that the edification had to be still standing.

Voters were able to submit their nominations for “most amazing edification in the world” by e-mail, text message or a telephone call to the “New Open World Corporation” headquarters. Weber calculated that they received 100 million votes, and eventually reduced this to a list of 21 semi-finalists. After an arduous counting of votes, the final results were announced on July 7 th 2007 during a ceremony that took place in “The Stadium of Light” in Lisbon, Portugal.

The list of winners was revealed throughout the course of this amazing ceremony and the winners included: The statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Machu Picchu in Cusco, Peru, The Great Wall of China, The City of Petra in Jordan, The Taj Mahal in Agra city, India, The Colosseum in Roma, Italy and finally, the holy city of Chichen Itza in the Yucatan península, Mexico.

It is important to mention that, with exception of the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Brazil, the rest of the winning edifications have also been awarded the title of “World heritage site” by “UNESCO”.

After almost 1000 years of existence, Chichen Itza is awarded world recognition

Chichen Itza was awarded the title “World heritage site” by “UNESCO” in 1988. The organisation detailed in their statement that Chichen Itza is a clear example of the Maya-Toltec civilization work that has withstood the test of time, thanks to the fusion of the two cultures building techniques. These techniques allowed both civilizations to imprint their vision of the universe while creating real masterpieces in the form of stone monuments such as:

The pyramid of Kukulkan, The thousand Column plaza and The Temple of the warriors, and El Caracol or “The Snail”.

Come and discover Chichen Itza, one of the “New 7 wonders of the world”, loved by millions and internationally recognised.
